It's Still Pumpkin Season

Everyone knows pumpkin season lasts October 1 - November 30.  Before pumpkin season officially ends, I thought I'd just share a few pics from our annual pilgrimage to our favorite local pumpkin patch. 

The first thing we always do is tackle the corn maize.

We totally killed that corn maize.

We're so smart.

Then it was down to business with pumpkins.

Eddy picked out this giant among gourds. We dubbed it Sasquash.

We bought so many pumpkins, guys.

Then we did just one more maze. But not a maize.

Dump Trucks Go Boom, Boom!

We have a nephew and that nephew loves dump trucks.  I found a quilt pattern one day for a dump truck and I realized just what to do with that pattern.  Make a quilt for Harrison!

I used some buttons that used to be my grandma's for the wheels.

I added some sweet little cloud quilting and a big ole "H".

Gene and Annie sent me the sweetest video of Harrison chatting about his quilt and it made my day! Enjoy, kiddo!

New House Stalking

My brother and his awesome wife just bought their first house!  I was really excited when I found out, so I wanted to make them a really special housewarming gift.  It began as all good gifts do, with stalking.

I started with the real estate photos and combined a couple of views into a scene that I liked and then traced it out on fabric.

Then I started attaching fabrics over the picture.

Did a little quilting and framed it up!

Eddy Loves Mount Hood

Ever since I realized I hadn't made very many quilts for my Eddy, I've been trying to remedy the situation. The latest installation is a small quilt for his office. He picked this pattern of Mount Hood, his favorite local landmark, and he picked the fabric.

Here are the first few units together.

In fact, things went along swimmingly until I realized I made a mistake on one of the units! That little corner of blue in the bottom. Had to be redone. Many stitches ripped.

Rupert liked the pieced top.

I chose some simple straight line quilting.

And a fun backing fabric.

Here it is all hung up in the office!

Sitting on Quilts

It's been a while since I've blogged, so I figured I'd get back into it with one of the projects I'm most proud of from the last few months. One of my goals in learning upholstery has always been to upholster a chair with quilts.

Obviously.

I started with this old green rocker we've always loved sitting in.  The poor thing was definitely in need of some TLC, though.

Then I stripped it down to the frame.

And started to rebuild the structure.

I did some sewing with these very strange upholstery needles.

Then it was time to start preparing my quilts. I used antique quilt tops and combined them with modern backing, batting, and threads in a dense quilting pattern to add some strength to the fabric so they would withstand the upholstery process.

Then I started arranging the quilts on the chair frame.

I was a bit nervous about running out of fabric, so I waited until the very end to trim everything down instead of trimming along the way and ended up with a rather lovely mess at the back.

The second to last step was recovering these arm scrolls. There were *LOTS* of rusty little nails holding them on.

Here is the chair in its new natural habitat, lacking only its cushion.

And finally the cushion!

Now I can take a break from making quilts to sit on some quilts! Living the dream, folks!
